Vision Assistance from the Lions

Lions Clubs in Alaska District 49A offer vision assistance to those living in Southeast, Southwest and Central Alaska. Some of the vision-related services that are offered include:

• Vision screening in schools, at baby fairs, for military vets
• Vision screening at the Alaska State Fair
• Assistance with prescription and eye wear costs for those without insurance

Residents in each community can contact the Lions Club in their area to request assistance.

About Lions Vision Assistance

Our Lion’s district is made up of 32 individual Lions Clubs. We are all part of the largest service organization in the world, in 49,000 clubs in 200 countries, with 1.4 million members. Our motto of “We Serve” is captured through our Vision Trailer.

We serve the State of Alaska, including JBER, by going into elementary schools and screening students for possible eye problems. We also screen our vets during Stand Down and unhoused individuals at Homeless Connect every year. Visionscreening lets us know if your child needs help. We are here to be that help. We are here to give our children a better life by improving their ability to see and learn. This includes providing free eye exams and glasses for those in need. In the past 12 years we Lions and our volunteers have served our communities by screening over 208,803 students.

We are always looking for volunteers. We have expanded our role in our Alaska schools, and we will be needing additional helpers. Due to the financial difficulties our schools and particularly our school nurses, we are now offering addition health screenings: distance acuity screenings and hearing tests to all of the grades, pre-school through 12^th grade.

We are on our second year of distance acuity. We have screened 6,052 students in 67 schools over the 2 years. We just finished our first year of hearing tests, screening a total of 3,594 students in 32 schools.
